My Legacy (To My Grandchildren)

For my grandchildren, I have learned to quilt.  Each one of you will receive a quilt that I have made.  For you, to receive a legacy of who I am and what you mean to me.  The quilt has taught me to be disciplined, to learn something new and personlize it.  Have the determination to acheivce better and see it through.  Each quilt is designed uniquely to you.  Every piece of material selected, measured, cut, pressed, measured again, sewn and quilted.  These are also life's principles you must learn  I didn't realized until I finished my first quilt how much a quilt and life corralates with each other.

A quilt is a legacy not only of who I am, but messages for you.  Each piece of cloth is measured more than onece, but cut only once.  Don't follow, when it's wrong.  Be a leader, do what is right.  Your quilt is made with blood, sweat and tears (DNA).  Cuts on the fingers, pain of arthritis, tears of the several re-dos to make it right.  The message of love lasts longer that the pain I endured.  I wanted to make sure the messages would help you throughout your life.  Wrap the quilt around you and know my loving arms are wrapped around you forever.

Your quilt will fade and become worn, as will you.  By then, I will be gone, but your quilt will remind you of your youth when your grandmother loved you enough to learn and make a unique quilt  for you.

Happy Mother's Day

Mother's Day is in a few days and I cannot help but think of my mother who passed away a little over 10 months ago.  She passed away of Alziemers Disease.  I was fortunate to be with her during the last days.  My promise was kept to her and the many miles of separation would not prevent me from being with her in passing.  Though, she really hadn't known me anymore, in those last days, I believe she did know I was there.  Moments of lucid looks, comments, and gestures proved that.

When one is young, you don't think about your parents', grandparents' death, much less being with them when they pass.  However, it is a part of life and though difficult at the time, I would have not missed it.  Surrounded by the ones she loved brings honor to a life lived.  Death should not be fearful, but a celebration of life.    As a bride's hand is transferred to the groom, I handed her to God.  Letting go wasn't easy, but it was her right.   And LOVE is Letting Go!

Happy Mother's Day, Mom.
